This Was Never Just a Job

There are moments in life that quietly divide everything into before and after.

For me, birth became one of those moments.

It didn’t happen all at once, and it wasn’t something I could point to right away. It grew over time, in the room, in the stillness between contractions, in the moments where words didn’t feel necessary. I found myself watching, listening, and slowly realizing that what was happening in those spaces was so much more than physical.

It wasn’t just about labor progressing or techniques being used well. It was about transformation.

I was watching women step into something deeper than they expected. I was watching strength rise up in ways that couldn’t be taught ahead of time. I was watching surrender unfold in a world that constantly tells us to hold everything together.

And somewhere along the way, I realized I couldn’t look away from that.

There is something about being invited into a birth space that changes you.

Over the years, here in the everyday rhythm of life across Metro Detroit, I’ve been welcomed into so many of these moments. Each one different. Each one carrying its own story, its own hopes, its own unknowns.

And every time, I feel the weight of it in the most humbling way.

I didn’t step into this work because it made sense on paper. I stepped into it because I couldn’t ignore the pull anymore. There was something about supporting women in birth that felt deeply meaningful—like I was being trusted with something sacred, even when it wasn’t spoken out loud.

I didn’t feel like I needed to have all the answers. What mattered was showing up steady, present, and aware of what was needed in the moment. Sometimes that means offering hands-on support through labor. Sometimes it looks like quiet encouragement when things feel long or uncertain. And sometimes it is as simple as sitting close, making eye contact, and letting a woman know she is not alone in what she is doing.

Over time, I also began to understand that this work would ask something of me.

There are late nights and early mornings. There are missed plans and moments at home that I have had to step away from. There are long drives on familiar roads, heading toward a space where everything is about to change for someone else.

That is the part people do not always see.

And while there is a cost to saying yes to this kind of work,

there is also something deeply meaningful in it.

Because I have seen what happens when a woman feels supported instead of dismissed. I have seen the difference it makes when she feels informed instead of overwhelmed. I have watched women begin to trust their bodies in ways they were not sure they could.

It does not make birth easy, but it changes the way it is experienced.

There are moments that stay with me long after I leave.

The sound of a baby’s first cry filling the room.

The shift in the atmosphere when the intensity finally gives way to relief.

A mother, often surprised, quietly saying, “I did it.”

Those moments never feel routine to me.

They feel significant.

Every. Single. Time.

Somewhere along the way, this work stopped being something I simply did

and became part of who I am.

It has shaped how I see women. It has shaped how I listen, how I support, and how I hold space for both strength and vulnerability at the same time.

And even now, after supporting hundreds of births, that feeling has not faded. If anything, it has deepened.

I do not take it lightly when a family invites me into their story.

They are allowing me into a space that is full of anticipation, questions, and vulnerability. They are trusting me to walk alongside them in a moment they will remember for the rest of their lives. That is something I continue to carry with great

care.

If you are in this season—pregnant, preparing, maybe feeling both excitement and uncertainty—I want you to hear this gently:

You do not have to walk into birth feeling alone or unprepared.

There is space for you to feel supported.

There is space for your questions.

There is space for you to step into this with confidence,

even if you are still figuring things out.

And if you are looking for someone to walk alongside you in that,

I would truly love to hear your story.
