Birthing Forward: Part Two Preparing Your Heart for a VBAC: Honoring Your Story and Moving Forward with Hope

Every birth leaves an imprint.

Some memories bring smiles immediately. Some bring tears. Some bring a mixture of both. For many families preparing for a VBAC, the previous birth is still very much part of the journey. It may have been a beautiful experience. It may have been unexpected. It may have been difficult. It may have been filled with moments of strength and moments of uncertainty.

Whatever your story is, it deserves to be honored.

One of the greatest privileges of my work as a doula is sitting with families and hearing their stories. Before we ever talk about labor positions, comfort techniques, or birth preferences, I want to know about the journey that brought them here.

Because your previous birth matters.

Not because it determines what will happen next.

But because it shaped the way you are entering this pregnancy.

I remember sitting with a mom who was preparing for her VBAC. As we talked about her first birth, I could hear the love she had for her baby and the gratitude she felt for the care she received. But I could also hear the questions that had stayed with her.

What happened?

Could things have been different?

Could she trust her body again?

She wasn't looking for someone to erase her previous experience. She wasn't looking for someone to tell her that everything happened for a reason or that she should simply move on.

She needed someone to listen.

She needed someone to remind her that one birth did not define her.

And most importantly, she needed permission to hope again.

I think many VBAC families carry a similar feeling. They are excited for this baby, but they are also approaching birth with a little more awareness than they had before. They know birth is powerful. They know things don't always go according to plan. They know how much trust it takes to surrender to the process.

That knowledge isn't a weakness.

It is wisdom.

Your previous birth gave you experience. It gave you a deeper understanding of yourself, your preferences, and the kind of support you desire this time. A VBAC is not about going backward and trying to recreate the birth you hoped for the first time. It is about moving forward into a new experience with more information, more preparation, and more support.

One of the most beautiful things I witness with VBAC families is watching confidence return.

Sometimes it happens slowly.

It happens when a mother asks a question at an appointment and feels truly heard.

It happens when she learns more about how birth works.

It happens when her partner realizes how they can support her.

It happens when she begins to understand that her body is not something she has to fear.

Your body carried you through your first birth.

Your body adapted.

Your body protected you and your baby.

And now, your body is preparing for another incredible journey.

That doesn't mean we ignore the hard parts.

It means we make room for the whole story.

The joy.

The uncertainty.

The growth.

The healing.

The hope.

Preparing emotionally for a VBAC is not about forcing yourself to feel fearless. Fear and hope can exist together. Questions and confidence can exist together. You can acknowledge what was hard while still believing that something beautiful is ahead.

That is where true confidence comes from. Not from pretending birth is always predictable. But from knowing you have prepared, you have options, and you have people walking beside you.

This is one of the reasons I created the Redeeming Birth Workshop. So many families need a space to process their previous birth experience while also looking ahead with hope. This workshop isn't about focusing on what went wrong. It is about understanding your story, honoring where you've been, and creating space for healing as you prepare for what comes next.

For families planning a VBAC, the VBACing Better Workshop builds on that foundation by combining emotional preparation, evidence-based education, and practical birth preparation. Together, we explore your previous birth, your hopes for this one, your questions for your provider, and the tools that can help you approach labor feeling confident and supported.

Because preparation is about more than knowing what to do.

It is about knowing who you are.

It is about trusting that you can walk into birth with both wisdom and wonder.

One of my favorite moments during a VBAC journey is when a mother realizes she is no longer only thinking about what happened before.

She starts dreaming about what could happen next. She begins imagining meeting her baby. She begins picturing herself supported, encouraged, and surrounded by people who believe in her. She begins to see this birth not as a chance to fix the past, but as a beautiful new chapter. And that is what I want every family to experience.

Not a perfect birth.

A supported birth.

A birth where you feel informed.

A birth where you feel respected.

A birth where you feel connected to your body and your baby.

A birth where there is room for both preparation and joy.

Your previous birth is part of your story.

But it is not the end of your story.

There is still so much hope ahead.
